What To Expect On A Skiing Vacation
No Comments
A lot of people enjoy ski vacations. Not everybody who has ever thought about a ski vacation has been skiing, so those people might not have a real sense of what this type of vacation will entail or what they need to know before they embark on such a journey. Here are four things for those people who might not have any idea of what to expect or what to hope for on their next skiing vacation.1. It’s going to be cold. For snow to be in existence, the temperatures have to be below freezing. In the United States that means 32°F, everywhere else that mean 0°C. At temperatures below these levels, if you’re not used to it, it’s easy to get frostbitten, or at least very cold very quickly. They need to make sure that you bring outerwear to protect yourself, because there are some things you can buy at ski lodges and some things you can’t buy a ski lodge, but you can guarantee that most things you do purchase will cost you more money than if you get them somewhere else. Since its skiing, this means heavy winter gloves, parkas, and skiing outfits to help fight off the effects that the air will have on your skin while you’re moving. You might even want to think about some kind of mask to cover your face if you’ve never been exposed to these kinds of temperatures before.
2. Not all ski lodges are warm. Everybody had this image of ski lodges with warm fires, maybe a bear’s head hangs over the fireplace, a place with lots of hot coffee or hot cocoa, and tales of people and their most positive skiing experiences. While the majority of quality slopes are like this, it’s just not this way everywhere you go. You need to call ahead and ask every skiing destination exactly what comprises their ski lodge so that you’ll know if you need to make reservations at a hotel instead.
3. Skiing lifts don’t stop. This is probably the first shocking thing someone new to skiing will notice. Ski lifts are always moving, so when you’re on the bottom they will scoop you up, which means you have to make sure you’re in the right position. Sometimes there will be someone to help you, but not always. At the same time, when you get to the top it’s not going to stop to let you get off all that easily, so you have to be ready to jump off at the appropriate time. That can be a little scary and unnerving as well, which is why it’s something you need to know before you go skiing for the first time. Of course, there are many places that won’t start you at a level where you have to get on a ski lift if it’s your first time skiing, but there many people who think skiing looks easy and won’t work their way up.
4. Ski lift are sometimes really high over the snow. You will think about this all that much until the first time you’re in a ski lift, but you could literally be 100 feet or more above the slope on the ski lift. And since most ski lifts do not have seatbelts or arm bars for you to hold onto, this means you’re pretty much dangling over a very high drop only holding on to the cable that’s holding the chair on the list. If you’re afraid of heights you’re going to have to get over that really quick, or make sure not to look down. Of course, that will make it a little difficult when you get to the top and have to jump off the ski lift. Hopefully, you had a skiing location where there’s someone at the top will help you get off, but that’s not always the case.
